Causes of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome
SJS is a dermatological emergency and can result from an infection or a medication allergy, though it is most often the latter. SJS, along with its more severe form, Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), have been linked to several different anti-gout medications, penicillin, and anticonvulsants. In some cases, SJS has been known to develop following physical stimuli such as exposure to ultraviolet light or radiation therapy. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in 2008, popular anti-drug medication Allopurinol was the most common cause of SJS throughout Europe and Israel and was linked to 18 percent of all SJS and TEN cases.
The following medications have all been associated with SJS:
- Allopurinol
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)
- Sulfonamides and penicillins
- Dilantin
- Phenytoin
If you developed SJS or TEN after being given a certain type of medication, our firm can represent your interests and fight to recover maximum compensation on your behalf. Depending on the circumstances, you may have grounds to file a legal claim against the hospital, your doctor, the drug manufacturer, or a combination of all three. Whatever the case may be, our firm is prepared to stand by your side and pursue every available opportunity to help you secure the financial recovery you deserve.
