Defective IVC Filters
The vena cava is the body's primary vein to pump blood from the lower extremities, up through the body, and back into the heart. An IVC filter – a metal contraption that looks similar to a tiny coat hanger with multiple limbs – is implanted within the vena cava where it is meant to prevent blood clots from entering the lungs, heart, and other major organs. Improper manufacturing or implantation of an IVC filter can cause it to fail catastrophically and splinter within the patient, usually without warning and weeks or months after the procedure.
A defective IVC filter may be directly responsible for a patient's:
